To a certain segment of American society, a visit to Charlotte, North Carolina means a visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. This 150,000 square foot facility presents such a thorough history of stock car racing and such a comprehensive array of interactive exhibits that visitors may leave with grease on their hands. From the film about stock car history in the Belk High Octane Theater to Sonoco Glory Road, where historic cars are on display, to the memorabilia throughout the facility, the NASCAR Hall of Fame is sure to rev fans' engines.
To experience one or more outdoor adventures, visitors to Charlotte may want to check out the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Featuring more than 400 acres of woodlands on the banks of the Catawba River, this outdoor wonderland serves up more than 14 miles of biking, hiking and running trails, climbing walls and a host of water sports. An AllSport Pass allows all-day access to whitewater rafting, flat-water kayaking, whitewater kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and enough other activities to keep adrenaline junkies redlining.
And yet golfers who couldn't care less about endless left-hand turns or adventure sports can still find plenty of 18-hole reasons to visit Charlotte. Part of the Carolina Trail, Charlotte Golf Links is a stellar Scottish links-style Tom Doak design that wends past ponds and streams and provides scenic beauty among its numerous-but-manageable challenges. And Ballantyne Resort Golf Club is a relatively recent edition to the area and features a quality track that most players will find well worth investigating.
