Bald Mountain Hole #15

Golf Course Overview: Bald Mountain

Insights From An Insider With Mark Eades, Marketing Director

By Brian Weis

Local and traveling golfers love to research courses before playing them, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set an expectation before their upcoming round. Below is an interview with Mark Eades who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.

How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
Bald Mountain is one of two course we offer here at Rumbling Bald Resort. Bald Mountain has a unique five par 5 and five par 3 layout that provides greater opportunity for the elusive birdie or eagle. It's a shot makers course meaning on some holes you are playing for position only with certain shots. Even though the course is within a community it has limited visual distractions of homes and buildings. The front nine has numerous opportunities to go low, but the start of the back nine you better be prepared and take your pars.

For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
The basic layout has not changed throughout the years. However, we are currently undergoing select tree removal on the entire course. We are either removing or pruning trees that are starting to effect playability on certain holes as they were designed to be played. This has really opened things up and visually and also allowed for better growing conditions for our fairways, tee boxes and greens. We have also been enhancing the landscaping throughout the course with plants, flowers, and mulch to really help each hole pop.

What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
The hardest three holes really depends on your game. Most would say #10, #11, and #12 and the hardest and walking away with par is a good thing. I would agree, but it does not get much easier on #13, #14 or #15. Things tighten up on the back nine at Bald Mountain, so have your game ready.

What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
Bald Mountain's 16th hole is a par three that was a scene location in the original hit movie "Dirty Dancing". Nobody puts baby in a corner.

What tournaments/events have you (recently) hosted or will be hosting?
We have numerous annual tournaments each year at both courses. The range from Golf Member specific to local Charities and Organizations.

Besides golf, what other amenities do you offer if a golfer wants to spend most of the day at your facility?
We are more than a 36-hole golf destination. Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure is the preferred Blue Ridge Mountain vacation home for families from across the country. Our picturesque community takes its name from the 3,200 foot mountain, Rumbling Bald, with it's towering cliffs perched high above the beautiful Lake Lure. Spread over 3,000+ acres, this resort community offers activities and amenities for the entire family including two 18-hole championship golf courses, over 150 resort vacation rentals, private white sand beach, three unique dining options, tennis, spa and salon, wellness center, swimming, boating, hiking, and much more. We are also the premier wedding destination in Lake Lure.

For the traveling golfer, do you have lodging onsite or partner with any area hotels?
Rumbling Bald Resort offers a variety of vacation rentals, whether you're looking for something intimate, or a place where everyone can gather at once. Look out on the mountains, the lake, or on the exquisite greens of the golf courses, and experience the luxury of a heartfelt welcome and exquisite service.

Signature sandwich or drink?
Legends on the Lake is the restaurant most golfers visit at this course and the Legends Burger is one of the best in the area. Fresh house-ground meat, never frozen, and prepared to your exact specifications with an abundance or topping options. Bring your appetite.

About: Brian Weis

Brian Weis Brian Weis is the mastermind behind GolfTrips.com, a vast network of golf travel and directory sites covering everything from the rolling fairways of Wisconsin to the sunbaked desert layouts of Arizona. If there’s a golf destination worth visiting, chances are, Brian has written about it, played it, or at the very least, found a way to justify a "business trip" there.

As a card-carrying member of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA), International Network of Golf (ING), Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA), International Golf Travel Writers Association (IGTWA), and The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG), Brian has the credentials to prove that talking about golf is his full-time job. In 2016, his peers even handed him The Shaheen Cup, a prestigious award in golf travel writing—essentially the Masters green jacket for guys who don’t hit the range but still know where the best 19th holes are.

Brian’s love for golf goes way back. As a kid, he competed in junior and high school golf, only to realize that his dreams of a college golf scholarship had about the same odds as a 30-handicap making a hole-in-one. Instead, he took the more practical route—working on the West Bend Country Club grounds crew to fund his University of Wisconsin education. Little did he know that mowing greens and fixing divots would one day lead to a career writing about the best courses on the planet.

In 2004, Brian turned his golf passion into a business, launching GolfWisconsin.com. Three years later, he expanded his vision, and GolfTrips.com was born—a one-stop shop for golf travel junkies looking for their next tee time. Today, his empire spans all 50 states, and 20+ international destinations.

On the course, Brian is a weekend warrior who oscillates between a 5 and 9 handicap, depending on how much he's been traveling (or how generous he’s feeling with his scorecard). His signature move" A high, soft fade that his playing partners affectionately (or not-so-affectionately) call "The Weis Slice." But when he catches one clean, his 300+ yard drives remind everyone that while he may write about golf for a living, he can still send a ball into the next zip code with the best of them.

Whether he’s hunting down the best public courses, digging up hidden gems, or simply outdriving his buddies, Brian Weis is living proof that golf is more than a game—it’s a way of life.
